A holder of a B.V.M. (Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi), MSc. (Master of Science, University of Nairobi) and a Ph.D. (University of St. Andrews, Scotland), Dr Kimwele is a veterinarian and scholar currently a Senior Lecturer, Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, University of Nairobi.
His early work experience includes two years as a District Field Veterinarian in charge hygiene covering all aspects of public health in meat hygiene; humane pre-slaughter and slaughter process and sanitation of slaughterhouse and retail outlets.
Most of Dr. Kimwele’s other experience has been as an academic both in teaching and research particularly in the area of molecular genetics as applied in conservation biology and wildlife forensics. He teaches physiology, ethology (veterinary ethology and ethics and wildlife behavior) as well as other areas of conservation biology and research. Dr. Kimwele teaches, supervises, and mentors undergraduates and postgraduates both at MSc and Ph.D level. He is an adjunct Professor at Western Kentucky University as well as Coordinator of the University of Nairobi- Western Kentucky program and affiliated African Center for Biodiversity Conservation (ACBC).
Dr. Kimwele has a substantial interest in animal welfare and was Chairman Youth for conservation (YfC) Management Council in 2004 and before becoming Chairman of Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) in 2006. His animal welfare interests have involved research and activities covering wildlife conservation (consumptive utilization vs non-consumptive utilization), GAP (good agricultural practice), alternatives to use of animals in research and training use of as well as being involved other general Animal welfare issues (both Nationally and Internationally). He is also a member of the University of Nairobi’s Biosafety, Ethics and Animal Care Committee into Animal Research as well as The Animal Welfare Committee of The University Animal Hospital. He also plays part in the Management Committee of the National Animal Welfare Committee Coalition called (Animal Welfare Action Kenya (AWAKE)).
As Chairman of ANAW Board of Directors, he is responsible for guiding the vision and mission of ANAW through coordinating the Board’s fiduciary duties and obligations which, among others, include oversight, advisory and policy development.
