Since 1940s when the first bullfighting was staged in a western town of Kenya called Kakamega as part of the cultural homecoming celebrations for warriors who had participated in the 2nd world war, many bulls are still tormented and severely injured in bullfights in Kakamega. For all these many years, majority bullfight attendees have been locals, but currently there are efforts, sadly spearheaded by the Kenya government to build a bull ring in the town so as to attract tourists.
We are convinced that 99 percent of these targeted tourists will never return to another fight event after witnessing the relentless cruelty in the ring.
In partnership with other animal welfare organizations and the media, ANAW successfully campaigned against a bull fighting event organized to take place in Kenya’s capital Nairobi in December 2008. This fight was purposed to popularize and usher in the commercialization of the otherwise low-scale cultural event. We continue to make our objection known to this cruel barbaric blood sport now invaded by Companies and Politicians seeking publicity.
The bull never has a chance to defend himself, much less survive. Bullfighting is a senseless, degrading spectacle that has no place in a civilized society. Please do not support animal cruelty.
Thank you for your time and consideration to save the defenseless bull.
