About 20 students from six (6) universities in Kenya namely; Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, United States International University – Africa, Egerton University, Masinde Muliro University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology on Tuesday 23rd May 2017 took part in a peaceful demonstration to protest the government’s (through Kenya Railways Corporation) intention to route the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2A through Nairobi National Park.

The jubilant students, mostly from their respective campuses’ environmental clubs had planned to start their peaceful protest at the Chinese Embassy, Nairobi to deliver a copy of ‘STOP ORDER’ issued by National Environment Tribunal (NET) stopping all activities relating to SGR Phase 2A until a matter in court on the same, is heard and determinized. However, they were not able to meet and deliver the orders to the Chinese envoy in Kenya after a stoppage by embassy policemen.

Unmoved, the students under the leadership of Sidney Quntai, Chair, Kenya Coalition for Wildlife and Conservation Management (KCWCM), left the heavily protected gate chanting ‘Reroute SGR; Away from the Park’ and regrouped not very far from the embassy where they addressed the media on the cause of their demo (see the links below). They vowed to re-strategize and return on a later date to stage even a bigger protest to protect the park from being decimated by the said government’s multibillion infrastructure project.
